Like most people, I’ve been taking pictures for a long while now. My first camera was this 1970s Kodak Hawkeye Instamatic II. It used 126 cartridge film and produced tiny, little 4×4 prints of questionable quality.
Every once in a while I run across a few of the pictures made with it. I’d like to say that I’m impressed with the quality of the images I captured as a youth, but I’m not. They’re pretty bad. Really bad, actually. They’re valuable only in the memories that they captured, not in how they were captured.
I’ve kept at it, however, and nearly 35 years later, I’ve realized the difference between taking and making pictures.
As a kid, I took pictures. As a working professional, my job is to make pictures–good pictures. Taking a picture implies passivity and taking what you are given. Making a picture is active and means that the photographer is looking to create something–sometimes from nothing–that isn’t necessarily visible to the casual observer.
A glance. A turn of the head. A splash of light or stray shadow. An alternate view. These are the things a photographer searches for to make a picture.
From my time in film school at Penn State University and later at The American Film Institute, I’ve been intrigued by the art and craft of capturing images. After 10 years as a fillmmaker and videographer, I left the fold after being bitten by the Internet bug. But even though I demoted my passion from a vocation to a hobby by entering the interactive marketing world, I knew I would be back. And so I am.
Style and Philosophy
Photography freezes time and tells the story of a moment that grows in value with the passage of time. I strive to capture these moments of truth. It is only when that truth is captured that a good photograph can be made. And when preparation and a bit of luck intersect, a remarkable photograph may well be made.
Whether commercial, editorial, or portrait photography, I will tell the story of the moment and make you the best images possible.
